Italy

The King's Curse

Italy is named as the place from which Reginald Pole has come before arriving at Margaret Pole’s gate. Its significance in the scene is relational rather than descriptive: it marks the distance between mother and son and makes his unexpected appearance the focus of the moment.

Identification

The steward first reports that a gentleman at the gate claims to be Margaret Pole’s son. When Margaret assumes the visitor is Geoffrey Pole, the steward clarifies that he is her son from Italy. Margaret then identifies him as Reginald Pole. The exchange establishes Italy as Reginald’s point of origin, but gives no further details about his journey or circumstances there.

Narrative Role

Reginald’s arrival interrupts a quiet gathering in which Margaret and her ladies have been listening to Princess Mary Tudor practice a song on the lute. The brief mention of Italy shifts the scene from Mary’s music and Margaret’s thoughts about her future to the news that a son has arrived. Italy remains outside the narrated action: the text offers no landscape or account of Reginald’s life there, using the place instead to frame his return to his mother.
